Continuing our virtual educational tour, the next alphabetical stop is Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. This one square mile very picturesque village is probably best remembered as the place where Clint Eastwood was once the mayor.
It’s the town where you will not find any fast-food joints, but lots of options for fine food, from Wine Spectator award-winning restaurants to casual dining and pubs. Unusually, Carmel has no street addresses, parking meters, and it’s the place where you need a permit to wear high heels shoes.
Carmel dates back to the 6th century. The first Europeans arrived in the 1700s as missionaries. Prompted by the literary movement of the late 1800s, an artist colony formed in the village. Resident artists included Jack London, Sinclair Lewis, Robinson Jeffers, and Mary Austin.
Carmel was a very pleasant stop on our long two-week family drive on the scenic Pacific Highway. This trip was a special reminder that our busy business career lives require quality down time which gets you closer to your family and recharge your batteries for an even more successful future.
In the words of my Spaghetti Western friend Clint, Carmel-by-the-Sea did indeed make our day.
