It is a Small World
IT’S A SMALL WORLD: “Go where you feel most alive” – Unknown
Continuing our global virtual educational tour, our next stop is Switzerland’s Bernina Express Train. From Chur to Tirano, this 4+ hour trip is a marvel of engineering and spectacular views.
Envisioned in 1888, for 125 years this train has become a leading Switzerland experience that pre-COVID-19 was enjoyed 12 million passengers per year.
The railway’s longest tunnel measures 19,042 meters (nearly 12 miles), 30% of the line operates at over 1,500 meters (nearly a mile) above sea level, and 30% of the network has UNESCO World Heritage Status.
The entire journey has no less than 55 tunnels, with three of them being spiral tunnels. There are also 196 bridges. The highest point on the entire trip, the Ospizio Bernina, at 2253 meters (7,392 feet) above sea level. Amazingly, there is no cogwheel technology needed to reach it and this makes the Bernina line the highest railway in Europe without a cogwheel.
Switzerland was my home base starting late 2012 for four years. It’s a location where I hosted multiple global customers. The amazing beauty of the country and particularly this train ride was a reminder that we all need to stop, visualize possibilities, and enjoy each moment as it was our last. Go where you feel most alive for it’s a small world after all.
